Children's Tutoring Program

Model of the Tutoring Program

  • Program provided at selected schools, during the school day.
  • Tutors work with 4-5 students, one-on-one, for 20-30 minutes.
  • Students are seen 2-3 times a week.
  • Tutors are instructed and supervised by retired and certified educators.

Goals of the Program

  • To improve the reading skills of children in Grades 1-3 who are reading below grade level and are under-resourced.
  • To increase a child’s self-confidence through one-on-one support in comprehension and decoding skills.
  • To foster a love of reading, an appreciation of literature, and provide the children with positive role models.

Growth of the Tutoring Program

“It’s fun.  We read funny books.  We laugh a lot.  We read long and short books.”
 – Student

“Excellent program as some children learn better from others than when reading with a parent.  It’s a great program that provides students with extra help without making them feel less smart than other students.” –Parent

“I found this program to be very beneficial to my students.  Thank you so much!”
-Teacher, HWDSB

“We are indeed grateful for all the hard work and dedication of the volunteer tutors.  The students and staff, at both of the schools, are very appreciative of the time and effort of the Neighbour to Neighbour Centre in organizing this wonderful program.”
- Superintendent of Education, HWCDSB

“We have observed dramatic gains in our student’s scores in Literacy and down the road I know it will serve to ensure future success.  If students read well they feel better about themselves and they continue to succeed.”
- Principal, HWDSB

“It is very rewarding.  The students are all great kids.  As a future teacher I am learning a lot about strategies to use with the students and can also see these tools in action-and they work!”
